Chapter II presents a review of the "Cake Debates" literature. I also describe a generic econometric framework, which I use to clarify some points of controversy in the literature. Extant approaches to endogeneity in two-part models have failed to consider "separability." Chapter III presents a novel estimator that accounts for endogeneity without imposing "separability." Chapter IV presents a mediation analysis that explores whether improvements in beneficiary health can explain the negative relationship between Medicare Part D and the use of hospital care. %I The University of North Carolina at Greensboro %C Greensboro, NC %V 3722547 %P 132 %8 2015 %G English %U http://proxy.lib.umich.edu/login?url=http://search.proquest.com/docview/1722227114?accountid=14667http://mgetit.lib.umich.edu/?ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&ctx_enc=info:ofi/enc:UTF-8&rfr_id=info:sid/ProQuest+Dissertations+%26+Theses+A%26I&rft_val_fmt=info:ofi/fmt: %9 Ph.D. %M 1722227114 %4 0511:Economic theory %!
