Memory Decline After Coronary Revascularization: Procedure Type Does Not Change Risk

Despite the absence of conclusive evidence that revascularization accelerates rate of cognitive decline in older adults, concern exists. After a retrospective study showed greater cognitive decline following CABG than observed in a matched cohort of Medicare beneficiaries, strategies to reduce this risk were pursued.1 Several studies compared outcomes in CABG patients exposed or not exposed to cardiopulmonary bypass pumps, which is among suspected causes for neurologic impairment.2-5 No difference up to five years after revascularization was seen.
