Preconference Workshop at GSA 2022
There is a growing need to understand how individuals within the same work environments experience different outcomes, particularly among those from under-represented groups (e.g., racial and ethnic minorities), as well as how different work environments affect later-life health and other important outcomes. Two new data resources are available that will open up new research opportunities:
- A linkage of Occupational Information Network Data (O*NET) to detailed 2000 and 2010 Census occupational codes. This dataset contains comprehensive, detailed measures of associated knowledge, skills, abilities, contexts, preparation, styles, and activities for US jobs, and can be linked to any datasets containing 2000 and/or 2010 Census occupation codes.
- A linkage O*NET data to the Health and Retirement Study (HRS).
This workshop will provide detailed information on both new resources. It will provide background on why job characteristic information is important for gerontological research, an overview of the O*NET data, and introduction to the HRS-O*NET data, a demonstration of how to describe the development and properties of the measures available in the new linked dataset, and demonstrate how the dataset and measures can be used. We recently developed a Health and Retirement Study (HRS) product linking this new O*NET-Census 2010 dataset with this robust national longitudinal study. This session will provide an overview of how to use the dataset in the HRS. This workshop may be of interest to gerontology researchers studying the role of occupations across the life course on important outcomes in later life. A portion of the workshop will be dedicated to working with attendees to explore the use of these data in their own research.
