Using HRS Data: A Guide for New Users

Want to begin using HRS data but don’t know where to start? Or you’re using HRS data but want to learn more? This user guide will help new users get started and provide guidance that may be useful to others who are already familiar with the study. The guide provides

  • a high-level overview of the HRS core survey design and the entire survey content
  • an introduction to RAND HRS Products
  • information on accessing public, sensitive, and restricted data
  • insights on using the resources of the HRS website
  • detailed guidance on data structure and management
  • guidance on applying weights in data analysis
  • example code in SAS, SPSS, Stata, and R

The user guide covers much of the content and data exercises covered in the June workshop, Introduction to the Health and Retirement Study Workshop.

The link below takes you to a pdf of the user guide Using Health and Retirement Study Data: A Guide for New Users and to a zipped file that contains the code in R, SAS, SPSS, and STATA for data management and statistical analysis explained in the user guide.
