Abstract

This study investigates the social isolation, loneliness, and physical health outcomes among senior citizens residing in a Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Area (GIDA) community. The research aims to profile participants based on age, sex, civil status, income, occupation, living arrangement, and educational attainment. It also evaluates their levels of social isolation, loneliness, and physical health outcomes using the Barthel index. Additionally, the study examines the correlation between these factors and determines whether demographic profiles influence the outcomes. The findings reveal that the majority of participants are aged 60-65, with a slightly higher number of females compared to males. Most have only elementary education and live with a spouse. The study identifies significant feelings of exclusion among the participants, moderate social isolation, and high independence in daily activities. Older age groups, particularly those aged 76-85, experience higher levels of loneliness. A notable but small negative correlation exists between physical health outcomes and social isolation, indicating that increased social isolation may lead to worse physical health outcomes. No significant correlation was found between loneliness and social isolation. Based on these results, the study highlights the critical impact of loneliness on physical health and the need for targeted interventions. The proposed intervention plan includes workshops to enhance social engagement, medical programs to support physical and emotional health, and emergency preparedness initiatives. The plan emphasizes securing funding, collaborating with health units, organizing outreach and social events, and distributing assistive devices and emergency kits. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation will ensure the effectiveness of the interventions and adjust strategies as needed. This research contributes valuable insights into the social and health challenges faced by senior citizens in GIDA communities and underscores the importance of comprehensive support strategies to improve their quality of life.
