gridMET Weather Data Files

The Health and Retirement Study Contextual Data Resource (HRS-CDR) is a collection of user-friendly datasets that enable researchers to study the impact of place on health and well-being among HRS respondents.

This HRS-CDR data product was created by a joint project of the University of Southern California and the University of Michigan, sponsored by the National Institute on Aging (NIA_R21AG045625).

The HRS-CDR weather data provides monthly measures on heat index categories, wind child index categories, precipitation, and average temperatures from 1979-2023. The measures are calculated from raw data downloaded from gridMET Climatology Lab at the University of California Merced. Data are available at the census tract level. Four data products are released, corresponding with each type of measure provided (i.e., heat index, wind chill index, precipitation, and temperature data).
