Disability Analysis File

Version 1.0 of the Disability Analysis File (DAF) data set is an analytical file consisting of administrative data in an easy-to-use format. The file contains historical, longitudinal, and one-time data on HRS respondents who participated in the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) programs and consented to allow the HRS to obtain their administrative benefits records at the Social Security Administration. Information is available for 2,826 respondents, covering the period 1994 through 2018.

There are two versions of DAF available to restricted data users: one without geographic identifiers and the other one with geographic identifiers. The “default” version is the one without geographic identifiers. Users who plan to use the version with geographic identifiers will be asked on the RDA application to explain why merging SSA administrative data and geographic identifiers is necessary. To apply to access the DAF, please read the instructions for accessing HRS Restricted Data.

Notes:

For each public release data set all geographic variables have been aggregated to the Census Division level. Files derived from SSA administrative data may not be merged with any data containing geographic identifiers at a level of aggregation finer than Census Division. In addition they may not be merged with any other Restricted Data Set(s) without the explicit written permission of the Health and Retirement Study.
